Steps to Become a Pilot

At Flight Path: Aviation Academy, we’re here to guide you on your journey to the skies. Whether you're dreaming of flying a commercial airliner, a private jet, or even a helicopter, becoming a pilot is a challenging but incredibly rewarding career path.

Know these essential steps you need to follow, from the initial eligibility requirements to flight training and beyond.

STEP 1. Do Your Homework: Prepare for Your Dream

Before you start your pilot journey, here’s what you need to know:

  • Mastering Key Skills: Includes aviation concepts like navigation, weather patterns, and crisis management.
  • Choosing Your Path: Decide whether you want to become a commercial, private, or helicopter pilot, as each has its own training path.
  • Essential Traits: Learn qualities like patience, confidence, and the ability to adapt to emergencies.

STEP 2. Eligibility Criteria: Are You Ready to Take Off?

To start your journey, you need to meet a few basic eligibility requirements:

  • Educational Requirements: You must have passed 12th grade with a science background (Physics and Mathematics).
  • Age Requirement: The minimum age is 17 years.
  • Medical Certification: A Class 2 medical certificate is required to start training, and a Class 1 medical will be needed for commercial pilots.
  • Vision & Mental Fitness: You must have good eyesight, with or without glasses, and be mentally alert, especially in emergencies.

The Pathway to Becoming a Commercial Pilot

Flight Path: Aviation Academy will guide you through every stage of becoming a pilot. Here’s how you can get there

Step 1: Medical Examination

Your first step is to get a Class 2 medical examination from a DGCA-approved examiner. A typical Class 2 medical includes tests for vision, hearing, and general fitness (e.g., ECG, chest X-ray, blood, and urine tests). Once cleared, your certificate will be valid for 2 years.

Step 2: Apply for a Computer Number

To apply for your DGCA theory exams, you’ll need a Computer Number. This number is used for correspondence with the DGCA and to track your application progress. Visit the Pariksha portal, upload the required documents (e.g., marksheets, Aadhar card), and your Computer Number will be issued in about 45 days.

Step 3: DGCA Theory Exams

There are 6 DGCA theory exams you must clear, covering:

  • Air Navigation
  • Air Regulations
  • Aviation Meteorology
  • Technical General
  • Technical Specific
  • Radio Telephony Restricted (RTR)

Step 4: Class 1 Medicals

To obtain your Commercial Pilot License (CPL), you must undergo a more detailed Class 1 medical exam, which includes additional checks on hearing, vision, and overall fitness. This medical is valid for 12 months.

Step 5: Flight Training

Once you’ve completed the theory exams and passed the Class 1 medical, you’ll move on to flight training. For CPL, this involves completing 200 flight hours, which include:

Flight training can be conducted locally in India or abroad at approved locations in countries like the USA, Canada, South Africa, and New Zealand, ensuring a diverse training experience that meets DGCA standards.

Step 6: Conversion (If Applicable)

If you complete your flight training abroad, you’ll need to go through the conversion process to meet DGCA requirements. This includes additional flight hours and exams to ensure compliance with Indian aviation standards.

STEP 4. Type-Rating & Airline Interviews

After obtaining your CPL, the next step is Type-Rating, which involves specialized training to operate larger jets. This is typically done in simulators, with training lasting anywhere from 40 days to 2 months.

Once you’re type-rated, you can either:

  1. Get a job first and then complete the type-rating as required by your airline.
  2. Complete type-rating first and wait for a job.

Choosing the right flight training institute is crucial. Consider these factors:

  • Location: Would you prefer to train in India or abroad? Each location offers distinct advantages in terms of weather conditions, training infrastructure, and the overall experience.
  • Budget: Pilot training is an investment. Research different schools, compare fees, and ensure that you’re getting the best value for your money.
  • Instructor Quality: A good instructor is essential for your success. Choose schools with experienced instructors and low student-to-teacher ratios.
